Portal, along with Half-Life, is one of the unique video games Valve made. The puzzle mechanics are quite good, but what brings it over the top is the science fiction background and quirky humor the AI robot GLaDOS. While considered a short game, it and its sequel are listed on the 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die and also thought to be one of the greatest video games of all time. There’s currently an Apple ][ short homebrew version and a Nintendo DS fanmade port with different levels. These fanmade games can be played for RetroAchievements.
Portal 2 was an inevitable continuation of the plot, and is also a great game on the 1001 list. Many people wish Valve would spend more time with making Half-Life and Portal sequels than running their store Steam, but considering how much money they must be making running that store, it’s understandable why they focus on that and related projects like Steam Deck.
