When Thomas Harris was writing the first book, Red Dragon, it came to him how Hannibal would be so evil and end up being the focus of the book. And the character portrays so well that Manhunter and The Silence of the Lambs are on the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die and Hannibal is on the 1001 TV Shows You Must Watch Before You Die. The books the author wrote aren’t really on must-read literature, but the movies and tv show are, and I think it’s because the enormity of the Hannibal character looms over you on the screen in ways that are practically impossible in print, and the screen is the real way to experience it.
Since the series is psychological horror, you have to be in a certain mood to watch them, but for what they are trying to accomplish there isn’t many movies that quite match it.
