The original arcade game was put out in 1990, and was a surprise success for the struggling company that made it. Its character created a series of games, even when the original company was no longer making them. It’s a vertical shooter, which was popular at the time, but it does it particularly well. It has skill bonuses for not using bombs. Before the bullet hell age of arcade games, it does well with not as many bullets on screen, and it has a nice color scheme. TurboGrafx-16 has the most faithful port, with the Japanese CD version having CD audio and extra levels. You can buy Raiden and sequels at Steam or PlayStation store. It’s a great beginner game for people trying to get into the series, and fun enough for experienced players.
